SoMa Crime & Safety: Hit-And-Run, Shooting, Assaults And Robberies

While we don't report on every crime, we do our best to keep you informed of major crimes and safety concerns in the neighborhood. Here's a selection of crimes reported around SoMa over the past month. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.

Shooting

A man, 47, was shot in the back around 4pm Feb. 29th while driving through the neighborhood. An unidentified suspect shot at the victim's vehicle, striking him once in the back. The exact location of the shooting was not provided, and no arrest was made.

Stabbings

A 33-year-old woman suffered a minor injury just after 2:15am March 18th following an altercation at Third and Folsom. The suspect, a 23-year-old woman, was fighting with the victim's boyfriend. The victim left her apartment to breakup the fight and pepper sprayed the suspect, who subsequently cut on the victim on the chin with a knife. The suspect was taken into custody.

A man, 41, was stabbed during an argument around 1:15am March 2nd at Sixth and Mission. The victim and the suspect, a woman age 30-40, were arguing in the middle of the street when the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in upper shoulder area. The suspect fled on foot and was not apprehended.

Around 4am Feb. 27th, a homeless man, 36, was stabbed in the hand while sitting in his tent at Fourth and Harrison. The suspect, a 49-year-old man, approached and they began to argue. The suspect then took a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim in the hand. The suspect fled but was arrested by responding officers.

A woman, 24, was found at 12:40am Feb. 23rd at Sixth and Minna with a puncture wound to her chest. Police say the weapon was a kitchen knife, but the victim did not provide further information.

Hit-And-Run

A 38-year-old man was hit by a grey sedan while crossing the street at 10th and Mission around 1:30am March 4th. The driver of the vehicle was traveling westbound on Mission Street and struck the victim, who was in the crosswalk heading north on 10th Street. The driver fled the scene via 10th Street and was not apprehended. The victim was transferred to the hospital with a laceration to the head and a finger that was almost severed.

Robberies

A woman was robbed by a man wielding a knife at 2:10am March 19th. The victim was walking on the 1500 block of Mission when she felt a tug on her purse. When she turned around, the suspect, 20-25, was waving a knife. He then grabbed her purse and fled westbound on Mission. There were no injuries or arrests.

At 5:30pm March 19th, a man was robbed at gunpoint by two men at Division and Brannan streets. One suspect approached the victim, who was standing outside his vehicle, pointed a gun and demanded his wallet and cash. The victim gave up his property without incident. No arrest was made.

A 20-year-old man and 19-year-old woman were robbed at gunpoint by a group of four suspects at 2:45am March 14th on the 600 block of Mission Street. The victims were walking down the street when the suspects, three men and one woman in their 20s, showed a handgun and demanded the victim's property. The female victim ran and was chased by the female suspect, while the male victim handed over his backpack containing his cell phone, tablet, laptop and wallet. All four suspects then fled northbound via Annie Alley. There were no injuries or arrests.

A man, 32, was assaulted and robbed by two men at 11:30pm March 11th at Mission and Main streets. The victim was walking down the street when one suspect blocked his path and punched him in the face. The second suspect then approached from behind and took the victim's property from his pants pocket. Both suspects fled, and neither were arrested.

A 41-year-old woman was forcefully robbed at 9:30pm March 4th on the 900 block of Mission Street. The victim was walking on the sidewalk when two suspects pulled up in an SUV. One suspect jumped out, pushed the victim to the ground and pulled her purse from her grip. Both suspects then fled in the vehicle. No arrest was made.

At 3:20pm Feb. 26th, a 32-year-old man was nearly robbed of his headphones while walking on the 1300 block of Stevenson. After the suspect, also a 32-year-old man, ripped the headphones off of the victim's head, the two struggled over the device and broke it. The suspect was then arrested.

Also on the 1300 block of Stevenson, two women were robbed by a man with a stick at 7:30pm Feb. 23rd. The victims, ages 32 and 33, were walking when the suspect, an unidentified man, approached and hit them both with a stick. The suspect took the victim's property and fled on foot. Both victims were transferred to the hospital with minor injuries. No arrest was made.

Gas Station Fire

As we previously reported, the engine of a mini bus exploded and caught fire while parked at the Chevron at Ninth and Howard streets. Flames shot high into the air, charring the gas station's canopy and causing evacuations of surrounding buildings, but no injuries.

Aggravated Assault

Around 10pm March 11th, a 19-year-old man was assaulted on the 800 block of Mission Street. The victim and a friend were spray painting a wall inside a building when the suspect approached and punched the victim in the face. The victim lost consciousness, and the suspect fled. No arrest was made.

A man, 22, was attacked around 7:45pm Feb. 29th at Fifth and Bryant. The suspect, a 36-year-old man, was in a fight with an unknown individual. He then approached the victim and attacked him unprovoked, hitting him 10 or more times with his fists before the attack ended. The suspect was arrested.

Kidnapping & Assault

As we reported earlier this month, a woman was kidnapped and assaulted after leaving a nightclub around 1:10am March 4th. The 22-year-old woman hopped into a vehicle she thought was the rideshare car she had ordered. The 60-year-old male driver traveled two blocks before punching her in the face and trying to jump into the backseat with her. The victim fought him off, exited the vehicle and called for help. The vehicle fled before police arrived.

Hot Prowl

A home on the 900 block of Natoma Street had an uninvited guest at 7:45am March 3rd. The victim, a 64-year-old man, went out to walk his dog. When the door was propped open, the suspect, a 30-year-old man, entered house. The victim saw the suspect enter and ran back home to find the suspect inside, and confronted him. The victim escorted the suspect out and snapped photos of his silver Nissan Frontier. The suspect was later arrested by Daly City police officers.

Arson

Just before 8:30am March 6th, a 50-year-old man lit a newspaper stand on fire. Beyond the newspapers burning, there were no damages or injuries. The suspect was not apprehended.
