Each week, we'll feature an especially interesting event in the neighborhood based on the event submissions we get, and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.
A new gallery at Market and Rose streets is debuting its first official show on Friday. FraenkelLAB (1632 Market), which is an offshoot of downtown photography hub Fraenkel Gallery, will be opening its doors, with regular hours for the public, this week.
We first learned about FraenkelLAB when they launched a pop-up exhibition in the window of their now-completed gallery space. Now, the interior of the gallery is prepped and ready to go, and its first show has an interesting curator: director, screenwriter and actor John Waters, who's behind Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, Cry-Baby, and other cult classic films.
The show is titled Home Improvements, and features a multitude of artists and mediums. In a press release, Waters describes the exhibition as “a celebration of the low-tech concept of "remodeling."
"These twelve artists’ humble but surprisingly imperious paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings will hopefully make any serious property owner want to throw caution to the wind, pack up their living space, and start over," Waters stated.
The featured works are made from materials like as plastic bags, sponges, stereo equipment and toilet paper. Waters' own piece in the show is a baby stroller, with S&M-style leather straps installed.
Home Improvements will be on exhibition starting this Friday, and running through June 4th. FraenkelLAB is open to the public from 5-9pm Wednesdays through Saturdays, and at other times by appointment. We'll keep you updated on future shows in the small Hayes Valley space.
If the rainy weather has kept you down, here are a few opportunities to get out and about—including an outdoor movie screening, a learn-to-bike-in-the-city workshop and a chance to provide your input on Parcel O's temporary arts space. If you have an event you'd like to add to our events calendar, you can submit it here for free. If approved, your event will appear on our calendar and within the Hoodline news feed, which is seen by thousands of local readers every day.
