The weekend is almost here, and if you're not headed out to Outside Lands, here are some events worth checking out in the neighborhood.
The flip of the calendar means North Beach First Fridays are sashaying back into our lives. This month's events include an opening at Modern Eden Gallery (801 Greenwich St.) featuring Jana Brike and art inspired by the new album from Anomie Belle, Kevin Brown's "Extremely Loud" abstract art series at the Live Worms Art Gallery (1345 Grant Ave.) and an opening reception for Susanne Friedrich's The Ocean—with flamenco guitar by Benjamin Flores—at Sweetie's Art Bar (475 Francisco St.). Be sure to check out the map on their website and Facebook page for the latest.
Saturday brings a couple of interesting entertainment selections, including the monthly Bunny Pistol Barbary Coast Burlesque show at Doc's Lab (124 Columbus Ave.). Pistol is a world-renowned dancer, was a finalist for the Miss Viva Las Vegas Competition in 2008, and has performed in burlesque shows and festivals all over the world.
Later that evening, Breach Once More and The Primitive Screwheads will come together for a unique live stage production of the cult classic "The Big Lebowski"—with a Shakespearean twist. Much Ado About Lebowski features White Russians (starting at 7pm), an inappropriate user of bowling balls and unspeakable things done to an innocent rug. The show starts at 8pm at Fort Mason (2 Marina Blvd.), and tickets can be purchased online.
In other news around North Beach this week, six San Francisco poet laureates signed a letter against the pending eviction of poet Diego Deleo from his home on Chestnut street, a tenancy-in-common lawsuit has popped up on Lombard Street, and the Chronicle has a look at the personalities training and being trained at Empower (747 Front St.)
