If you've every wanted to fish but don't know where to start, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is offering a free fishing day on Saturday, where you don't need a sport fishing license to cast your line. All other regulations—such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions and fishing hours—remain in effect, but feel free to head out and give it a shot along the Fort Mason piers, the fishing platforms in Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 7 at the Broadway/Embarcadero intersection.
On Monday, the Il Giro di San Francisco bike race—formerly the “San Francisco Gran Prix"—returns to the area. Competitors will try and outrace each other through five quick right turns and one left turn around Levi's Plaza. The event is free for spectators; if you're heading that way, keep your eyes peeled as you cross at the intersections.
In the news this week, Saints Peter and Paul Church held a special vigil for victims of the recent earthquake in Italy; Father Albert Mengon revealed the Salesian priest who built the church was from the hard-hit area of Abruzzo. The Chronicle reported on the 88th birthday of Richard "Specs" Simmons, owner of Specs’ Twelve Adler Museum Cafe (12 Williams Place), and Mayor Ed Lee has reportedly promised that the city will cover the medical bills for Emma Zhou, the woman hit in the head by a falling tree branch in Washington Square Park in early August.
