A carjacking in the Outer Richmond in the early hours of this morning led to a police chase—and ultimately, a car wreck—in eastern SoMa.

According to the SFPD, the incident started around 3am at 24th Avenue and Geary Boulevard in the Richmond, where a 24-year-old man was parked, smoking a cigarette outside of his car. A 21-year-old male suspect approached the driver with a backpack in front of his chest, moving his hand inside of it to show the outline of a gun, and told him to move.

The victim ran across the street, and the first suspect and two more suspects, men aged 25 and 27, jumped in the vehicle, driving eastbound on Geary.

SFPD dispatch put out the vehicle description, and officers on duty were able to locate the vehicle. They attempted to effect a traffic stop, but the suspects took off, and a "short vehicle pursuit" ensued. The suspects' vehicle ultimately collided into a light pole and parking meter at Second and King streets. After the crash, one of the suspects fled the vehicle, with officers pursuing on foot.

After a short foot chase, police were able to take the fleeing suspect into custody, along with the two other suspects who remained in the vehicle. They were taken to the hospital to be treated; from there, they'll be taken to SF County Jail.

The aftermath of the crash kept many SoMa residents awake into the wee hours. Tipster Jordan C. sent photos, and tipster Kevin C. said that about 60 cops were on scene at the crash site around 4am. "My entire front porch area is covered in shattered glass right now."
