Turkey Day is nearly upon us. For those who aren't jetting out of town next weekend to indulge in food, friends and family elsewhere, spending all or part of the holiday supporting less-fortunate community members is a worthy way to build up an appetite for your evening feast—or work off the pumpkin pie you snuck in for breakfast.
If you're in the market for a community service opportunity to fill your Thanksgiving Day, we suggest you get on it quickly. In a city full of caring individuals, opportunities with many local nonprofits fill up fast.
From keeping seniors company to literally talking struggling individuals off the ledge on the Golden Gate Bridge, here are six opportunities around the city that are still open for your help on Thanksgiving Day.
In case you're wondering, a few popular opportunities have already "sold out," including:
- Serving Thanksgiving dinner at St. Anthony's Dining Room in the Tenderloin—but a few Christmas week shifts are still available.
- Serving meals at shelters run by Episcopal Community Service on Thanksgiving Day. Click here to see other volunteer opportunities available year-round and sign up for other dates.
- Serving Thanksgiving Dinner at Glide in the Tenderloin. To volunteer the week after or throughout December, check the nonprofit's volunteer calendar.
- Preparing Thanksgiving meals with Project Open Hand. Keep an eye on the website to sign up for December opportunities.
If we missed your favorite Thanksgiving Day volunteer opportunity, or you know of an organization desperately seeking reinforcements that day, please let us know in the comments below and/or submit a listing to the Hoodline events calendar.
