Plans were filed last month to construct a five-story, 55-room hotel at 937 Geary St. and demolish the existing one-story retail and garage building on site that currently houses the Hanaro Bar

Amsterdam Café was also previously a tenant of the building to be demolished, but it closed in February 2016 after a sizable rent increase. As we reported, Amsterdam is working to open in a new spot across the street.

The building also once housed an auto body shop that was briefly transformed into an art gallery by the same crew behind White Walls and the Shooting Gallery, both of which are also permanently closed.

Building owner Abbas Farad has authorized Stanton Architecture to serve as his agent with the Planning Department. Stanton on June 1st filed a preliminary project assessment application proposing to replace the existing one-story garage and commercial brick structure with a new tourist hotel.

The initial application does not include any details on whether the hotel would offer parking, but the plans submitted along with the application suggest the architect is considering including a 300 square-foot roof deck and a ground-floor breakfast room.

Planning’s 90-day window to respond to the preliminary project assessment filed on June 1st ends on August 30th, so we should know the city’s thoughts on the proposal soon.
