
Next week, the San Francisco Symphony celebrates its first Oktoberfest with a pop-up biergarten and live performances of Bavarian waltzes, polkas and other familiar folk favorites.
On Tuesday, October 3, conductor Christian Reif leads the SFS in a program that includes opera choruses with interludes by Mozart, Strauss, and other composers associated with a stein-raising good time.
Proceeds benefit SFS community, artistic and education programs; all guests must be 21 or older. (Dirndls and lederhosen encouraged.)
The SFS Oktoberfest celebration starts at 6pm; purchase tickets online for biergarten packages, or call the Volunteer Council at 415-503-5500.

Friday brings plenty of action on the silver screen, with free screenings of Old School in Mission Bay and The Pursuit of Happiness at Pier 39, along with the start of the 7th annual Hong Kong Cinema festival in Japantown.
The 82nd Madonna del Lume Celebration begins Saturday morning in North Beach and ends in Fisherman's Wharf with the traditional blessing of the fishing fleet. Keeping on the aquatic theme, there's also Sharktoberfest, which celebrates the return of the great whites to the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary which, incidentally, is a perfect reason to jump in the ocean in your finest black tie attire.
Round out the action on Sunday with a street fair in the Castro, the final Sunday Streets of the year in the Excelsior, adopting a furry sidekick from the SPCA and enjoying the wild world of vegetables.
