'Wooden Café' Hopes To Carve A Niche In Cole Valley's Coffee Scene

Three months after first being announced, Wooden Café is open for business at 862 Cole St. (at Carl), the former Doug's Suds location that closed in May 2015.

Launched by veteran barista and Sunset resident Steve Wickwire, Wooden rounds out a crowded coffee scene in Cole Valley, which already includes La Boulangerie, Peet's, Reverie, Cole Valley Café and Café Cole.

But Wickwire, who opened the doors just after Labor Day, isn't worried.

"We're excited to be here," he said. "We're focused on coffee, and a lot of careful brewing," he said. "Hopefully, a little different from what other people are offering."

Wooden's coffee is roasted by Intelligentsia, with baked goods by Jane, Wickwire said.  

"We may end up doing small baked things ourselves," he said, such as a run of cookies baked in-house. In the meantime, he's getting the business up and fully running as it settles into the neighborhood.

Wooden Café is open daily from 7am-6pm, offering coffee, teas, small baked goods, and wifi.
