A new soul food spot, offering Southern fare and more, has made its debut in the neighborhood. Located at 600 Harrison Ave. (between Monsignor Reynolds Way & Union Park St.) in the South End, the newcomer is called Southern Proper.
Designed to feel like "grandmother’s living room,” the new eatery comes courtesy of chef Jason Cheek (Toro, Coppa), who grew up in North Carolina, according to Southern Proper's website.
On the menu, look for a smoked pork rack with slaw and pickles, signature fried chicken and shrimp and grits with tasso and gravy. Sides include classic buttermilk biscuits, pimento mac n' cheese and collard greens. (Take a look at the full menu here.)
With a four-star rating out of six reviews on Yelp so far, Southern Proper has gotten a good response.
Sasha M., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on March 2nd, said: "I was more than stuffed at the end of the meal, to the point where I had to leave because I was going to fall asleep from all the food/drinks I had. I would love to come back here again, it was a great crowd, great energy, wonderful atmosphere."
Yelper Donald S. added: “These are bar none the best biscuits of my life! This includes any biscuit I've ever had in any southern state. Besides the fact that there has to be one pound of butter in these things, I don't think it's actually possible for a biscuit to be this crispy yet this airy.”
Interested? Stop by to welcome the new business to the neighborhood. Southern Proper is open Tuesday–Saturday from 5pm–11pm. (It's closed on Sunday and Monday.)
