A man was fatally stabbed near 20 Moore Street in Leominster Wednesday night, prompting a heavy law enforcement response that shut down the area near North Main Street and sent officers combing a nearby rail trail with flashlights well into the evening. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene around 9:30 p.m., where the male victim was found with critical stab wounds and pronounced dead, according to ObituaryPost.
Multi-Agency Response Near Rail Trail and Airport
The overnight investigation drew both Leominster police officers and Massachusetts State Police troopers, who shut down access near the intersection of North Main Street and Moore Street, close to Fitchburg Municipal Airport and the Twin Cities Rail Trail, according to Boston 25 News. Officers set up crime scene tape and searched behind the trail late into the evening, the station reported. Police also blocked off the area near Moore Street with tape, according to MassLive, which cited NBC10 Boston in reporting on the scene.
Witnesses told WCVB, as reported by MassLive, that they saw a person who appeared to have been stabbed, and that another individual was seen running away from the scene. Officers searched an area behind the rail trail using flashlights, per that same WCVB account relayed by MassLive. Separate initial police dispatch communications, shared on Facebook, reported that a male victim suffered serious stab wounds and that a suspect fled the Moore Street scene on foot.
Witness Describes the Moments Before Police Arrived
Andrew Doucette, a witness cited in the MassLive report, said the person fell to the ground and he knew things were not alright. Doucette said he asked the person if he was alright. By Thursday, police had cleared the scene, according to NBC10 Boston, as relayed by MassLive. Leominster police did not immediately return phone and email messages seeking additional comment, MassLive reported.
Key details remain unresolved as the investigation continues. It is not yet clear whether a suspect has been taken into custody following the early reports of someone fleeing on foot, nor has the identity of the deceased been released pending family notification. Whether the altercation began on private residential property or along the public rail trail corridor also has not been established.

The Twin Cities Rail Trail, which runs adjacent to the Moore Street scene, is a 4.7-mile paved multi-use path connecting downtown Fitchburg and downtown Leominster along the historic Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad corridor, and it opened its initial phase in June 2022, according to the trail's own mapping information. The area sits in a transitional zone between residential housing, the recreational trail, and the airport, giving investigators a wide swath of terrain to cover during the overnight search.
Leominster Police Chief Ryan Malatos has led the department since he was sworn in this past November 2024. Leominster, the second-most populous municipality in Worcester County, had an estimated population of 44,194 residents as of July 2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data for 2024 showed Leominster recorded 215 violent crimes that year, including 180 aggravated assaults and two homicides, for a violent crime rate of roughly 484 per 100,000 residents, according to AreaVibes. Statewide, preliminary figures released by the Healey-Driscoll Administration showed Part One violent and property crimes in Massachusetts dropped 4.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year, based on submissions from 394 law enforcement agencies.
This is not the city's first high-profile stabbing investigation in recent years. In May 2024, Leominster police responded to a stabbing at a local packaging plant in which a worker was charged with assault with intent to murder after attacking a co-worker, who survived life-threatening injuries. More recently, in May, Leominster police coordinated with Fitchburg police and school officials to arrest a youth following a safety threat against Leominster High School, part of a string of law enforcement operations in the city over the past two years.
