As the latest U.S. jobs report hits newsstands, how did cities in the Minneapolis area do in terms of new jobs added last month? And which industries and occupations may be attracting workers to the area most?

Minneapolis has risen to second place among U.S. cities in hiring for business systems consultants, according to new positions posted last month on jobs site Glassdoor. The city also ranked second in new job openings for information security engineers and support consultants.

Comparing across the country, the U.S. city with the most new positions for business systems consultants last month was Charlotte. While Charlotte edged out Minneapolis in total jobs for that skill set, the former has a larger population, at 808,834 compared to Minneapolis's 404,670, according to 2016 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Communities Survey.

If we focus on the number of jobs relative to the local population, Minneapolis drops to fourth place in per-capita hiring for business systems consultants. The city ranked fourth in new jobs for client technical specialists, and fifth for risk consultants, again relative to the local population.

Minneapolis fell just behind West Des Moines, Iowa in per-capita hiring for business systems consultants, while Bethesda, Maryland topped the charts nationwide in per-capita positions for client technical specialists.

Looking for new opportunities in a field with strong local demand? Companies like Wells Fargo are bringing on business systems consultants, and other local employers like Ameriprise are currently hiring information security engineers.
