Western Addition-based DIY school and studio Workshop is expanding its offerings to a new second location in the Upper Haight, at 1310 Haight St. (at Central).

Established in 2009 by Kelly Malone and David Knight, Workshop offers classes from expert teachers and makers, under the motto "drink beer, make stuff." Class topics range from sewing and woodworking to culinary arts, paper crafts, and printmaking.

At the original location, "our calendar was getting so full we weren't able to offer as many classes or the frequency of classes" students wanted, Knight said.

Since the Haight Street space is smaller than the original Workshop, it will mostly focus on hosting beginner woodworking and building classes, as well as some food-related classes (like chocolate and jam making).

Expanding to Haight Street will free up the main shop to offer a more diverse array of classes, like advanced sewing and woodworking. Workshop has already held some advanced woodworking classes at the Tenderloin's Get High on Mountains, which sold out immediately.

"We wound up wanting to have another space to develop new classes," Knight said. By moving some beginner classes to Haight Street, the Western Addition location can "do more than just beginner classes, go further with it."

Tonight, April 26, from 7-10 p.m., Workshop will open its doors for a welcome party. Refreshments will be on hand, and visitors will be able to participate in a water marbling activity to make DIY coasters.

The studio will also display samples of items students can make at upcoming classes on Haight Street, including furniture, photography and stained glass.
