Interested in adopting a pet — or just gazing at some cuddly canines? There are dozens of deserving dogs up for adoption at animal shelters in and around Mesa.

Animal shelters work hard to care for unhoused pets and connect them to loving homes. Hoodline used data from Petfinder to power this roundup of dogs currently available for adoption.

(Details like pet availability, training, vaccinations and other features are based on data provided by Petfinder and may be subject to change; contact the shelter for the latest information.)

Mera, pug

Mera is a sweet female pug dog staying at Arizona Pug Adoption & Rescue Network.

Mera gets along well with other dogs, cats and kids. She's mastered her house-training etiquette. She has been vaccinated and spayed.

Hi, I'm Mera, and I am a very active, five-year-old pug girl. I need an active friend to play with, preferably someone near to my size and age. I am an outgoing pug and love people. I definitely need some training and structure in my life. I need socialization so that I can greet other dogs in a nicer, calmer manner. I am very strong and exuberant. I prefer no young children in my home, as I will knock them down and play too rough. I do like other dogs, but probably would do best with a male pug. If you have been looking for an active pug girl, I might be just the pug for you.

Roo, pit bull terrier mix

Roo is a male pit bull terrier mix being cared for at One Love Pit Bull Foundation.

Roo gets along well with other dogs. He's neutered and vaccinated. He has mastered his house-training etiquette.

From Roo's current caretaker:

Roo is a sweet boy who can be a bit shy at first, but once he opens up, you will know a love like no other.

Darla, chihuahua

Darla is a female chihuahua dog currently housed at Arizona Chihuahua Rescue.

Darla is the life of the party, and she'll get along great with your cats and dogs. She's already house-trained. She already has all of her shots, and she is spayed.

Notes from Darla's caretakers:

Hi! I’m Darla, and I like playing fetch and love treats. I am loving and playful. You wouldn’t believe that I am six years old. I weigh around eight pounds and use all eight to love on you. My pack mates would say that I get along with everyone. I go in my kennel just fine, but would prefer to sleep with you.

Carl, pit bull terrier mix

Carl is a male pit bull terrier mix being cared for at One Love Pit Bull Foundation.

Carl loves other dogs. He is looking for cat-free family. Have no fear: he's already house-trained. He already has all of his shots, and he's neutered.

Here's what Carl's friends at One Love Pit Bull Foundation think of him:

Carl aka “Cuddly Carl” is a super cuddler who also enjoys long walks in the moonlight (or daylight). He loves ear, neck and chin rubs and will repay you with all the kisses! Carl can be a slightly picky eater, but his foster mom found he does like raw/natural food. He also enjoys chew bones and hot dogs. Picnic anyone?!

Esther, pug

Esther is a sweet female pug dog currently residing at Arizona Pug Adoption & Rescue Network.

Esther is the life of the party — she'll get along great with your other dogs, cats and kids. Have no fear: she is already house-trained. She is spayed, and she has all her shots.

From Esther's current caretaker:

Hi, my name is Esther, and I am a lovely, eight-year-old pug lady. I had to have an eye removed due to damage done just before coming to APARN. I can be very loving, and I am potty-trained. That said, you must always be willing to give a pug a couple of months in a new home to learn all of the rules and acceptable behaviors. I am a slow eater, and I like bananas and apples, but please keep the carrots away from me. I like to play with toys, there is just nothing like getting a new toy. I am currently living with a few other senior pugs. We get along most of the time. Foster mom thinks I attack the older boy for no reason, but trust me, there’s always a reason. I came from a home where I was an only dog for a long time, but I’m sure I can learn to be a good pack member; I just need guidance, patience and positive reinforcement.

Guero, Siberian husky and German shepherd mix

Guero is a lovable male Siberian husky and German shepherd mix currently residing at The Farm Rescue - Furever Animal Rescue and More.

Guero will get along great with your other dogs, cats and kids. He has mastered his house-training etiquette. He's already neutered, and he has all his shots.

Guero's current caretakers say:

Guero is such a sweet boy. He loves all people, children and dogs big and small. He would love a forever home where he can snuggle with people but also play and have fun outside. Guero has been patiently waiting for about half a year to find his forever home, and he is such a very sweet and loving boy who really deserves to find it.
