As fans of cronuts and cake pops can attest, food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending right this minute?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to uncover which eateries have been most discussed this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at Atlanta businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month and tracked businesses that consistently increase their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Bully Boy

This cocktail bar, which offers seafood, beer, wine, spirits and more, is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "Seafood" on Yelp.

Citywide, seafood spots saw a median 2.5 percent increase in new reviews over the past month, but Bully Boy saw a 25 percent increase, maintaining a superior four-star rating throughout.

Located at 828 Ralph McGill Blvd. in Poncey-Highland, Bully Boy specializes in seafood, featuring smoked bluefish pate, Virginia oyster sliders, barbecue Georgia white shrimp and more on the menu.  

Bareburger

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about Midtown's Bareburger, the traditional American spot, which offers burgers and salads, is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While businesses categorized as "Burgers" on Yelp saw a median 1.6 percent increase in new reviews over the past month, Bareburger bagged a 10.3 percent increase in new reviews within that timeframe, maintaining a mixed 3.5-star rating. It significantly outperformed the previous month by gaining 4.0 times more reviews than expected based on its past performance.

There's more that's trending on Atlanta's burger scene: Grindhouse Killer Burgers has seen a 7.9 percent increase in reviews.

Open at 715 Peachtree St. NE, Suite #102, since 2009, Bareburger offers organic and all natural burgers, salads and more. Midtown's McCray's Tavern is also making waves. Open since 2007 at 1163 W. Peachtree St. NE, the event space, sports bar and traditional American spot has seen a 16.7 percent bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 2.4 percent for all businesses tagged "American (Traditional)" on Yelp. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis, McCray's Tavern - Midtown's review count increased by more than 170 percent.

McCray's Tavern offers cocktails and pub food like the pimento cheese dip, fried okra and brisket sliders. Take a gander at the full menu here. Over the past month, it's maintained a convincing four-star rating among Yelpers.

Old Lady Gang

Castleberry Hill's Old Lady Gang is the city's buzziest Southern spot by the numbers.

The popular bar and Southern spot at 177 Peters St. SW increased its new review count by 4 percent over the past month, an outlier when compared to the median new review count of 1.7 percent for the Yelp category "Southern." It outperformed the previous month by gaining 2.1 times more reviews than expected based on past performance.

It's not the only trending outlier in the Southern category: Joy Cafe has seen a 2.6 percent increase in reviews.

With 3.5 stars on Yelp, Old Lady Gang specializes in Southern cuisine and comfort food, offering catfish, yams, mac and cheese, cornbread and more. 

Mission + Market

The Mission + Market is currently on the upswing in the New American category on Yelp.

While businesses categorized as "American (New)" on Yelp saw a median 1.8 percent increase in new reviews over the past month, this New American spot, which offers seafood and sandwiches, increased its by 9.2 percent—and kept its rating consistent at four stars. Review counts increased by more than 160 percent on a month-to-month basis.

Open for business at 3550 Lenox Road NE, Suite #550, since 2017, the business offers steaks, sandwiches and seafood like the jumbo lump crab with fromage blanc, mirabelle plum and Asian pear. For dessert, guests may dig into the strawberry and rhubarb sundae. View the menu here.
