We analyzed newly released data from Niche.com, which incorporates comprehensive report cards, rankings and reviews to help you choose the right school, to find out how schools in your area are performing and which have made the biggest leaps over the past year.

Maria L. Baldwin School's overall rating improved the most among its peers in Cambridge, rising from a B+ to an A-, according to data from Niche.

For the 2019-2020 school year, the school, located at 28 Sacramento St., enrolls 356 students. Niche graded the school a B+ for academics (on an A-D scale).

The overall ranking comes from Niche's proprietary algorithms. A school's ranking might change due to many factors, including the relative rankings of similar schools and whether a school gained or lost peers due to openings or closings. Other numbers come from current public data from the U.S. government.

Academically, 57% of Maria L. Baldwin School's students scored proficient or above in math, and 57% did so in reading. That's compared to city averages of 49% in math and 52% in reading.

It's not the only school that's climbed Niche's rankings this year. Martin Luther King Jr. School saw its overall rating increase from an A- to an A. The school is located at 102 Putnam Ave. and currently serves 317 students, of whom 27% identify as white, 26% identify as black and 22% identify as Asian.

Niche graded Martin Luther King Jr. School an A- for academics on an A-D scale. Its latest math and reading proficiency were both 67%.

Fletcher-Maynard Academy also saw improvement in its overall rating, from a B to a B+. The school is located at 225 Windsor St. and has 260 students currently enrolled, of whom 50% identify as black, 20% identify as white and 15% identify as Hispanic.

Niche graded Fletcher-Maynard Academy a B for academics on an A-D scale. The school's latest math proficiency was 42%, and reading proficiency was 47%.

While some public elementary schools are moving up the ranks, others are consistently top-rated overall, including:

  • Cambridgeport School, with an A- rating overall.
  • Graham & Parks School, rated B+ overall.
