Here's a brief roundup of recent changes at some of the Castro's health and beauty businesses.

Openings

Blade & Bristle (4327 18th St.)

Blade & Bristle Salon opened October 3rd at 4327 18th St. in the former Brody Salon space which closed in May.

The salon is owned by Jayson Pellot and Christian Neitro.

Pellot and Neitro met while working together at Castro's Bryan Roberts Salon.

Originally from Miami, Pellot moved to San Francisco 7 years ago. Pellot said he decided to open his first salon after doing really well at Bryan Roberts Salon.

Neitro moved from Germany four years ago where he previously operated a salon for 10 years.

Pellot tells Hoodline Bryan Roberts Salon was very supportive of them opening their own salon.

"I want the vibe at the salon to be very welcoming," said Pellot. "I want our clients to come in and feel like they're at a neighborhood bar and talk to each other."

Pellot said the response from the neighborhood has been positive so far. "It was surprising because I didn't think there was that much foot traffic," said Pellot.

Blade & Bristle takes both walk-ins and appointments. A typical haircut will cost $50. Along with cutting hair, Blade & Bristle also provides coloring, waxing and makeup.

Pellot tells Hoodline they're currently looking to fill two vacant chairs. Those interested should send an email to [email protected]

Regular hours are Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday.

Updates

Skin On Market (2299 Market St.)

Skin On Market has applied for conditional use authorization to permit a formula retail use at their location.

The issue was set to go before the Planning Commission this week, but it has pushed back to December 19th due to the absence of a quorum on the commission.

Opened in 2014, Skin On Market is independently owned and operated by Deedee Crossett.

Nearly three years ago, in January 2017, a complaint was filed that Skin On Market was operating as formula retail. The issued stemmed around the installation of a large 'Dermalogica' sign over the entrance.

Skin On Market is a licensed retailer of Dermalogica Skin Care products, which has nearly 40 locations worldwide.

After the Planning Department completed their investigation, it was determined Skin On Market was formula retail. While Skin On Market doesn't meet Planning Department rules designating formula retail as any store with 11 or more locations worldwide, it did meet certain standardized features which categorize it as 'formula retail.'

Those features included the large sign out front, standardized merchandise and uniform apparel.

Skin On Market is also seeking a separate exemption for their sign, which is too large according to Planning Department guidelines. If it's not approved, the sign will need to come down and a smaller one will need to be installed.

Skin On Market received the support of the Castro Merchants at this November member meeting.

Closures

GreenSurge (2301 Market Street)

After 5 years in the neighborhood, cold-pressed juice shop GreenSurge closed back in August.

GreenSurge opened in 2014 in the same building occupied by Fitness SF and Weaver's Coffee.

At the beginning of September, Hoodline tipster Julian R. said he witnessed equipment being taken out of the shop.

Hoodline reached out to owner Sergio Novoa, but he declined to comment on the closure.

Novoa also closed his second location at StudioMix at 1000 Van Ness Ave at O'Farrell.

When Hoodline interviewed Novoa in 2017, he was confident that GreenSurge stood out from the rest of the healthy drink competition.

Currently there's no indication of a new business moving into the space.

Remaining healthy smoothie and drink options in the Castro include Project Juice and Barry's Bootcamp
