While most businesses across San Francisco are temporarily closed due to Mayor London Breed's shelter-in-place order, a few are also closing permanently.

Prior to the order, the SoMa location of upscale home goods and furniture chain HD Buttercup announced plans to close, with a final sale event set to end on March 25.

But with the arrival of the shelter-in-place order, it's unclear if the 290 Townsend St. store will reopen to sell off its remaining stock. An employee at the store said that the situation remains undetermined for now.

While the employee declined to comment on reasons for the closure, a Facebook event for the final sale included a note to customers.

“San Francisco – thank you. You’ve been so good to us for the past 10 years,” it reads. “We’re incredibly grateful to have been a part of this community for so long.”

The original HD Buttercup debuted in Los Angeles about 15 years ago, according to the company's website. The store offers a wide selection of sofas, chairs, tables, storage, and bedroom furniture.

Two locations remain in Los Angeles, including a Culver City flagship store and another downtown. The store also had two locations in Orange County; one closed last year, while the other remains open.

Courtney Lake, a San Francisco-based interior designer, told Hoodline that HD Buttercup was “a great resource for contemporary and modern furniture that you knew was quality.”

When a light fixture didn't arrive in time for the Traditional Home Napa Valley showcase, “HD Buttercup was able to get me a new fixture that I could pick up that day and have installed for less than what I was going to pay the other vendor,” Lake said.  “They saved my ass ... that time and countless other times as well.”
