The Bay Area's shelter-in-place order has brought countless events usually held as in-person gatherings online. We're aiming to support local businesses in San Francisco and Oakland by highlighting five of these events each day.

Here's your SF event calendar for Thursday, April 23. Learn about SFMOMA's latest exhibition, join a virtual gala at the California Academy of Sciences or get to know the animals of Angel Island State Park with your kids  — all from the comfort of your couch.

This program, geared towards third, fourth and fifth-graders, offers an intro to the animals that live on Angel Island. While you can't visit the seals, raccoons, hawks and other animals at the moment, you can learn more about their behavior, their diets and efforts to protect them, in anticipation of a future visit.

SF State Percussion Ensemble performs Terry Riley’s “In C”

Attend a virtual concert with the SF State Percussion Ensemble, as they perform "In C" by composer Terry Riley. Riley, who was known as a pioneer of the minimalist school of composition, first composed the roughly 40-minute piece in 1964. The ensemble will be conducted by Allen Biggs, who performs regularly with the Berkeley, California, Oakland and Santa Rosa symphonies.

Virtual Book Event: C Pam Zhang in conversation with R.O. Kwon

C Pam Zhang is joining Green Apple Books for a live-streamed author event, moderated by novelist R.O. Kwon. Zang will discuss her debut novel "How Much of These Hills is Gold," about two young siblings who are the children of Chinese laborers in the California Gold Rush. After their father dies, they set out on a perilous journey, carrying his coffin on a stolen horse in search of a burial ground.

SFMOMA: Hal Fischer and Erin O'Toole on 'Thought Pieces'

While you can't see "Thought Pieces," the SFMOMA's exhibition of 1970s San Francisco photography by Donna-Lee Phillips, Lew Thomas, and Hal Fischer, you can enjoy Fischer's perspective on his work in this live-streamed talk. All three photographers explored the relationship between photography and language; Fischer is best known for "Gay Semiotics," his descriptive photographs of the dress codes used by gay men of the era.

Big Bang 2020: Live Online

While the California Academy of Sciences has had to cancel its annual Big Bang gala IRL, the party has moved online. Hear the Academy's experts discuss "rewilding," learn how the museum is caring for its animals during shelter-in-place, dress up as your favorite animal, help name a new animal addition to the museum, and more.
