Interested in adopting a pet — or just gazing at some cuddly canines up for adoption? There are dozens of darling dogs up for adoption at animal shelters in and around San Francisco. Some shelters in the Bay Area have temporarily closed or reduced their hours amid the coronavirus pandemic, so if you are interested in an available pet, contact the animal rescue for its current adoption process.

Animal shelters and pet rescue groups work hard to care for unhoused pets and connect them to loving homes. Hoodline used data from Petfinder to power this roundup of dogs currently available for adoption.

(Details like pet availability, training, vaccinations and other features are based on data provided by Petfinder and may be subject to change; contact the shelter for the latest information.)

Tilly, chihuahua mix

Tilly is a winsome female chihuahua mix currently housed at Rocket Dog Rescue.

Tilly loves other dogs and cats; Rocket Dog Rescue, however, wants to place her in a home without small children. She is spayed and vaccinated. Have no fear: She's already house-trained, too. Tilly is a special-needs pet, so please inquire about her specific care requirements.

Tilly's current caretakers say:

Tilly is a 8-10-pound, 4-year-old chihuahua mix who would love nothing more than to snuggle up with her humans any chance she can get. She wants nothing more than to be the center of someone’s world! When you arrive home, she will greet you with the cutest spins and dance. She is an easygoing, low-maintenance type of gal who prefers couch time and Netflix over playtime. She is quiet in the home and will sleep happily in her crate through the night, although she would just as happily snuggle up in bed as well. Tilly would most likely prefer to be the only dog in the house but is also OK with other respectful dogs or even cats.

Rocket Dog Rescue is currently holding virtual adoption events and will set up a virtual meet-and-greet through video chat. Learn more here.

Tiger, boxer and American bulldog mix

Tiger is a handsome male boxer and American bulldog mix being cared for at Grateful Dogs Rescue.

Tiger is neutered, and he has had all his shots. He has also mastered his house-training etiquette.

Notes from Tiger's caretakers:

Tiger's perfect day would be to sleep in late, have a morning snuggle with his human, a walk to a grassy field, followed by lounging in the sun all day, except for breaks to play with his favorite toys! In the evenings, Tiger loves to spend time with everyone in the living room. He is very social and has major FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). He falls asleep early and sleeps through the night. Tiger's ideal home would have access to a backyard or a space to run. He is a growing puppy with lots of energy.

Apply to adopt Tiger today at Petfinder.

During the shelter-in-place order, the rescue is holding only outdoor meets and home checks are being done virtually, according to its website.

Jake, Labrador retriever mix

Jake is a male Labrador retriever mix being cared for at Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue.

Jake is a social animal — he gets along well with other dogs. He has been vaccinated and neutered.

Jake's current caretakers say:

Meet Mr. Mellow! Jake is a happy boy whose favorite things are going on walks and snoozing in the great outdoors. He's making a very good recovery from his two emergency surgeries. He's a bit stiff when getting up from a nap but quickly shakes that off and is quite jaunty on walks. He walks very well on leash and is friendly to people and to dogs we meet. (No idea about cats.) He's affectionate and loves to be petted, yet he's not clingy and opts to spend some time alone. He rarely barks (so far only at squirrels trying to come into "his" yard) but does howl along with sirens if they are nearby.

Luigi is a sweet male terrier mix currently housed at 4 Dogs Farm Rescue.

Luigi likes to socialize, and he'll get along great with children, dogs or cats. He is already neutered, and he has had all his shots.

Luigi's current caretakers say:

Meet Luigi. This sweet and active young 9-year-old terrier mix is looking for a a loving and quite home. Luigi weighs 15 pounds. He does shed a little. Luigi is just learning how to walk on a leash, and he loves it.

Spike, Pomeranian and chihuahua mix

Spike is a sweet male Pomeranian and chihuahua mix being kept at Beyond Rescue.

Spike will get along great with your other dogs but would prefer a home without small children. He's already vaccinated and neutered.

Here's what Spike's friends at Beyond Rescue think of him:

Spike is a very cute boy and just the right size. But he is very fearful and nervous. He loves dog companions and would do best in a home with another small, calm dog. The ideal adopter would have experience working with shy and fearful dogs and have a patient nature to let him come out of his shell. If that is you, please fill out an application!

According to its Facebook page, Beyond Rescue is not currently hosting adoption events, but you can still schedule a private meet-and-greet with an available pet in an outdoor location.

Pico, chihuahua mix

Pico is a male chihuahua mix currently residing at 4 Dogs Farm Rescue.

Pico will get along great with other dogs. He's already vaccinated and neutered.

From Pico's current caretaker:

Pico is a loving and playful 1-year-old chihuahua who weighs 6 pounds of love. Pico's foster mom reports that Pico is really smart and has learned "sit" and "down." Pico loves to snuggle.

Walker, German shepherd mix

Walker is an adorable male German shepherd mix in the care of Grateful Dogs Rescue.

Walker is neutered and vaccinated.

Walker's current caretakers say:
