The Bay Area's shelter-in-place order has brought countless events usually held as in-person gatherings online. We're aiming to support local businesses in San Francisco and Oakland by highlighting five of these events each day.

Democracy Sounds Good: A Conversation on Artists, Arts, & Activism

2020 has been an unprecedented year in history — and in art. In this talk, Contemporary Jewish Museum curators Heidi Rabben and Qianjin Montoya will discuss the art and artists that are inspiring and challenging them in this difficult moment, and how this work might represent a pathway to change.

Introduction to French Workshop

Jump-start your French in this workshop centered on the basics: how to present yourself, numbers, vocabulary, and basic grammar rules. Aimed at tourists and businesspeople, the workshop will outline the essentials of French culture and communication, and provide a base level of knowledge on which you can expand.

Making Origami Animals: Online Workshop

Ariele Dwyer's day jobs are as a makeup artist and office manager, but she also has a gift for origami, which she's been practicing since she was 10. In this International Art Museum of America workshop, aimed at youth, Dwyer will teach the essentials of folding origami animals, such as a dog and a crane. Be sure to have some standard 6x6" origami paper on hand.

Overdose Prevention Webinar

The number of overdose deaths has risen in San Francisco in recent years, due to the opioid crisis and the increasing prevalence of fentanyl in the heroin supply. But there's also hope: tools like test strips and Narcan can help save lives by preventing and reversing overdoses.

In this talk, Kristen Marshall of harm-reduction group the DOPE Project will explain how everyday citizens can learn to use these tools, and help save fellow community members from overdosing.

Revisiting 'Gay USA': A Community Experience

Arthur J. Bressan Jr.’s groundbreaking 1977 documentary "Gay USA" captured some of the nation's earliest Gay Freedom Day marches and celebrations. Now, the GLBT Historical Society will screen it online, as part of its new digital exhibition about Pride's first decade.

After the screening, stick around for a conversation and Q&A with the exhibit's co-curator, Don Romesburg, and film historian Jenni Olson, who helped restore "Gay USA" for its 2018 rerelease.
