The Bay Area's shelter-in-place order has brought countless events usually held as in-person gatherings online. We're aiming to support local businesses in San Francisco and Oakland by highlighting five of these events each day.

Here's your San Francisco online event calendar for Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23. Join a watercolor workshop, learn to navigate a menu in Mandarin or hear a chat with the creator of popular comic strip 'Mutts.'

Watercolor Workshop with Lucia Gonnella

Kick the weekend off with an online watercolor session, hosted by community space Hayes Valley Art Works. North Beach-based artist Lucia Gonnella will guide participants in painting the cityscape of San Francisco, showcasing wet on wet, wet on dry, masking, salt, and lifting techniques. Our Spirits Carry Our Voices: West Oakland to West Africa Poetry Exchange

Tune in as the San Francisco Public Library presents poets from the Bay Area, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, coming together to read from the new collection "Our Spirits Carry Our Voices."

The book is the culmination of a project that began in 2016, in which Oakland- and Africa-based poets were paired as pen pals to collaborate on poems about the cultural and socioeconomic conditions that still divide the African diaspora, centuries after slavery first tore society apart.

The Art of Nothing: 25th Anniversary of 'Mutts'

In honor of the 25th anniversary of his comic strip "Mutts," Patrick McDonnell will join the Cartoon Art Museum for a conversation with novelist Glen David Gold. Published in newspapers around the country, the strip follows the adventures of Earl, a dog, and Mooch, a cat, as they navigate their neighborhood.

McConnell's new book, "The Art of Nothing," collects unseen artwork and favorite strips from "Mutts"' first 25 years, alongside commentary and an interview with his fellow comic artist Lynda Barry.

Want to learn how to order food in Mandarin? In this class, the Chinese Historical Society of America's Kathy Yang will teach food-related vocabulary, including the various cuisines of China and signature dishes. The class is geared towards beginners, and no special materials are needed to participate (though sticky notes and markers are recommended).

Stitched & Sewn: The Art of Trudie Strobel

California artist Trudie Strobel, who survived the Holocaust as a child, has become renowned for her vast, hand-stitched tableaus of dark and very personal memories from that traumatic time. In this talk with her biographer, Jody Savin, Strobel will share how a practice that started as a form of therapy developed into art that can now be found in public and private collections.
