Popular Dai Thanh Supermarket opens new location in BerryessaPhoto via Yelp

Popular Vietnamese supermarket Dai Thanh, which sold off a downtown San Jose property in 2021 for a pretty penny, has now opened the second of two new locations, this one on North Capitol Avenue in the Berryessa district.

Dai Thanh Supermarket had its grand opening Tuesday at 1641 North Capitol Avenue, in a former Lucky Supermarket that had been shuttered for several years. The family that owns the market, the Hua family, found and leased the location just a few months ago, as the Mercury News reports after a separate site that they purchased two years ago remained mired in a city approvals process. The future of that other property, the former An-Jan Feed & Pet Supply at Monterey Road and San Jose Avenue, remains uncertain.

The popular market had only just closed its downtown location at 418 South Second Street around Christmas, and as the Mercury News reports, the Huas kept all the workers on the payroll while they "scrambled" to get the North Capitol store open.

A second Dai Thanh Supermarket opened at 2040 Tully Road in East San Jose last June, and has been immediately popular.

The Huas were able to sell the SoFA district property, along with 16 parcels in total, for $17 million in 2021. As Hoodline reported at the time, they had already purchased the Tully Road building as a second location, for $6.8 million. The An-Jan site at 1633 Monterey Highway sold for $7.9 million around the same time, but proved to be much more difficult to convert to a grocery store, as Alanna Hua-Yamada tells the Mercury News.

The former Lucky site then arose as a possibility, and allowed them to quickly transition from the SoFA store to the new second location. So, where there was once one Dai Thanh, there are now two.
