The body of a second woman in about two years was discovered at the Newby Island Landfill in San Jose.
According to an NBC Bay Area report, the most recent body found on June 2 was identified as LaToya Renee Covington, a 33-year-old mother of three who had been unhoused at the time of her death. Covington's family was allegedly told that her body was in an unrecognizable state, and that investigators had to use fingerprints to identify her remains. As of now, the cause of death has not been released, no one knows how her body ended up at the landfill. Her family has setup a GoFundMe page looking to raise money for a private investigator and to cover funeral costs.
Another woman's body had previously been discovered at the same San Jose landfill, as KTVU reported. On May 19, 2021, employees of the landfill reportedly found the body of 33-year-old Allycia Kelley, who police later disclosed had been transported to the facility via routine landfill dropoff from a location in San Jose.
In the meantime, the San Jose Police Department is urging the public to provide any information they may have about either case by contacting Detective Cuenca #3915 of the homicide unit at (408) 277-5283, or to leave an anonymous tip at the Crime Stoppers tip line at (408) 947-7867.
