On June 10, 2023, a female prisoner died after a failed medical screening at the Santa Clara County Jail; a joint investigation into her death is now underway, according to the San Jose Police Department (SJPD).

The woman, whose identity has not been released at the time of writing, was arrested on June 6, 2023, and with a warrant out for her arrest, she informed officers of a medical condition requiring treatment at Valley Medical Center (VMC) in San Jose. After spending four days at the hospital, she was discharged by VMC staff and subsequently transported to the Santa Clara County Jail by an officer from SJPD on June 10, 2023.

Upon arrival at the jail, the prisoner was rejected by the jail's medical staff and transported back to Valley Medical Center via ambulance, where she was eventually pronounced deceased, as per the SJPD.

The sudden in-custody death has raised concerns over the processes involved in the transition of the prisoner from the hospital to the jail . While the cause of this tragic incident is still unknown, it has prompted multiple agencies to initiate an investigation.

Heading the investigation are the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit, with further monitoring by the SJPD's Internal Affairs Unit, the City Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor. The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office is also expected to provide their findings after conducting a thorough medical examination to determine the prisoner's cause of death, according to the San Jose Police Department.

As the joint investigation continues, the incident highlights shortcomings in the process of prisoner transfers between hospitals and jails and the level of care and attention devoted to the medical needs of prisoners during such transitions.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to reach out to the San Jose Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 408-277-5283 and contribute to the ongoing investigation, as mentioned in the SJPD news release.
