
Thursday marks the end of an era, as the curtains fall and the last screenings are shown at the Century 9 theater in the Westfield San Francisco Centre. As the Westfield Corporation abandons the mall to its lender, Cinemark-owned Century 9 Theater follows suit, making a permanent exit from the once-thriving shopping mall. While it may be the result of the corporation's surrender, it could just as likely be due to the increasingly challenging landscape for movie theaters, particularly large movieplex chains. This comes after the closure of several movie theaters in San Francisco, including the CineArts Empire, AMC Van Ness, and the CGV San Francisco 14, which closed permanently during the first few months of this year.
