
A tragic event occurred in East Oakland when a 73-year-old grandmother, Santu Maya, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver, causing heartache for her family and sparking an ongoing investigation. The hit-and-run happened at Foothill & Vicksburg as Santu Maya was trying to cross the street, and her family demands justice in light of this devastating event.
This heartbreaking incident happened just after 7 o'clock in the evening, as Santu Maya was on her daily walk with her daughter, Sanjoo Verma, and 10-year-old granddaughter, Arpitha Verma, only a few blocks away from their home, as reported by KTVU The surveillance video from the scene showed Santu Maya a little behind her family members, trying to catch up when a black Mercedes sedan, speeding and possibly racing another car, struck her and sped away as she lay helplessly on the ground.
According to police, the hit-and-run driver who fled the scene drove a black Mercedes E350 sedan. The Oakland police department has put out images of a possible suspect and is actively seeking leads and additional information to bring the responsible individual to justice.
OPD is releasing these pictures and asking for the community’s assistance in identifying, and/or locating, the above individual and vehicle, wanted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision.

Sanjoo Verma, the daughter of the deceased, pleads for the public's assistance in the ongoing investigation, stating, “It’s really painful, so please help me make justice for my mom. I want that” to KTVU news. She expressed her heartache and bewilderment about losing her mother within months of her arrival in the United States and the unfulfilled plans they had together for welcoming her to their new life.
