Roscoe Rike, a 30-year-old transgender man from Oakland, claimed that a pharmacist at a Walgreens store on Telegraph Avenue refused to provide him with his prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medication due to the pharmacist's religious beliefs. Despite having been going to the same pharmacy for almost a decade and receiving HRT at the location for the last three years without issue, Rike reported that this incident had been a distressing experience for him.

Rike shared his story on Reddit, stating that the unidentified pharmacist, who was not familiar to him, inquired about the purpose of his medication, then subsequently refused to fill the prescription due to his "religious beliefs." Rike captured the confrontation on video, evidence of which he hopes will help generate change and greater protection for transgender individuals in similar situations.
According to Rike, the pharmacist ultimately suggested that he should return later, when a different pharmacist would be available to assist him. Unwilling to accept this offer, Rike demanded to speak with a manager. After the pharmacist walked away, a pharmacy technician called the manager over. The manager, along with other employees, apologized profusely, and Rike was eventually provided with his medication. However, Rike argues that these actions are insufficient, stating, "I don’t know about the legality of what he did, but if it was legal, we need to change the law," as reported by KRON4.
The incident has led Rike to contact the Transgender Law Center, with plans to file a formal complaint against the Walgreens corporate office. In the meantime, he advises fellow transgender individuals to avoid acquiring HRT medications at that location, as they too may risk being denied care. Walgreens responded to the allegations by saying that they could not discuss individual patient interactions due to privacy concerns but would be reviewing the matter internally. The company also stated the following:
"Our policies are designed to ensure we meet the needs of our patients and customers, while respecting the religious and moral beliefs of our team members. In an instance where a team member has a religious or moral conviction that prevents them from meeting a customer’s need, we require the team member to refer the customer to another employee or manager on duty who can complete the transaction. These instances, however, are very rare." – Walgreens
Rike's allegations have elicited various reactions on social media platforms. Some users have expressed sympathy and solidarity with Rike, while others have offered alternative perspectives on the pharmacist's actions. On one side, the argument maintains that the pharmacist's religious beliefs should not be allowed to interfere with a patient's medical care. On the other, there are concerns about potential infringement on the pharmacist's First Amendment rights to religious freedom.
