Two of alternative rock's most influential women are finally sharing a stage, and Berkeley gets one of the first stops. Liz Phair and Sleater-Kinney will co-headline an all-ages show at the Greek Theatre on the UC Berkeley campus this Wednesday, September 9, with Nashville singer-songwriter Soccer Mommy opening with a solo set.
The concert is part of what the two acts are calling their first-ever co-headlining tour, dubbed The Flannel and the Fury, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The tour officially kicked off Sunday in El Cajon before working its way up the California coast, according to Liz Phair's official tour site, with stops in Los Angeles ahead of the Berkeley date.
Phair explained back in April that the tour celebrates women who helped redefine alternative rock in the 1990s, as she described in a video shared to social media and reported by Vice. That framing fits both headliners: Sleater-Kinney has remained at the forefront of adventurous rock for more than 30 years, per the Chronicle's report, while Phair built her name as a singular voice in the same era.
Two Careers That Rarely Crossed Paths
Despite running parallel careers in indie rock for three decades, Phair and Sleater-Kinney had rarely interacted or spoken in depth before organizing this joint tour, according to a September interview with the Los Angeles Times. The two acts said they respected each other from a distance for years but are only now building a personal relationship, the paper reported.
Phair released her breakthrough debut, Exile in Guyville, in 1993, an 18-track record that Matador Records issued and that served as a song-by-song response to the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. She has since sold more than 5 million records and earned two Grammy Award nominations, the Chronicle reports. Sleater-Kinney, formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994 by singer-guitarists Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein out of the Pacific Northwest Riot Grrrl scene, released its 11th studio album, Little Rope, in 2024. The visibility of women-led acts offers broader industry context.
Soccer Mommy Opens the Night
Opening the Berkeley show is Soccer Mommy, the project of Nashville-based singer-songwriter Sophie Allison, who released her fourth studio album, Evergreen, in October 2024 on Loma Vista Recordings. The record is another release from the project.
A Historic Stage for a Historic Pairing
The setting adds its own layer of history to the night. Built in 1903 on the UC Berkeley campus, the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre seats 8,500 and is recognized as the country's longest-running outdoor amphitheater, according to Secret San Francisco. The venue has hosted major political and civic moments over the decades, including President Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 commencement address and Mario Savio's pivotal 1964 Free Speech Movement speech, per the Greek Theatre's official site.
Independent promoter Another Planet Entertainment has exclusively operated concert programming at the venue since 2004. The Greek Theatre also recently sold out for a debut album performance by Sam Cooke's granddaughters, underscoring how frequently the venue draws major touring acts through its outdoor season.
Tickets for Wednesday's show range from $78.16 to $263.40, according to the Chronicle. The concert is an all-ages event, with the Greek Theatre located at 2001 Gayley Road on the UC Berkeley campus. According to UC Berkeley Parking and Transportation, public parking for Greek Theatre concerts is available for a $22 flat rate, with credit or debit cards accepted and no cash.
