Mountain View Police detectives have arrested the man accused of allegedly groping a 17-year-old girl while she was jogging along the Bay Trail in Palo Alto. Jorge Aguilar-Pereira, a 39-year-old resident of Sunnyvale, was arrested on July 10, 2023, at his workplace in Palo Alto, according to KTVU.

The victim was jogging on the evening of July 5 when she encountered Aguilar-Pereira walking his bicycle towards her. Aguilar-Pereira stopped the jogger and asked if she spoke Spanish. He then inquired about directions to a hotel, a request which turned sinister when he allegedly inappropriately touched her after requesting the direction from a map on her cell phone. The teenager promptly pushed Aguilar-Pereira away and fled the scene as reported by Palo Alto Daily Post.

Fortunately, the girl was able to provide a detailed description of the suspect to the Mountain View Police Department. This ultimately proved to be crucial in identifying and apprehending him. Mountain View Government News reported that two motorcycle officers, who were assigned to solely patrol the trail in search of the suspect, found Aguilar-Pereira thanks to the victim's detailed description. They managed to obtain his identification by stopping him while he was riding his bike on July 10.

The following day, detectives conducted a photo lineup with the victim, and she immediately identified Aguilar-Pereira as the man who assaulted her. Aguilar-Pereira was subsequently arrested without incident at his place of work in Palo Alto, marking the culmination of the persistent efforts by the Mountain View Police Department to bring the alleged assaulter to justice.

Investigators expressed gratitude towards the teenage victim for her courage in coming forward and providing an accurate description. Such details are invaluable in solving criminal cases, and in this instance, her testimony played a crucial role in apprehending the suspect.

Mountain View Police urge anyone who recognizes Aguilar-Pereira, or has any information about other potential crimes, to contact Detective Angelica Espitia at [email protected]. The department hopes that the arrest of Aguilar-Pereira can bring some peace of mind to the local community and mitigate any apprehensions about the safety of jogging or walking along the scenic Bay Trail via KTVU.
