On the fateful morning of July 5th, Gary told relatives he was going to cut down a tree in his backyard, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office reported. Gary was on a video call with a family member while he began trimming branches off the tree. Shortly after, the family member saw Gary go down a hill, and part of the tree fell on top of him.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, Gary did not survive, and he was pronounced dead, as per a NBC San Diego report. In a cruel twist, Gary was also the secretary for the Fletcher Hills Highland Association's board of directors and chaired its architectural review committee, NBC San Diego mentioned. As part of their abatement, the association regularly cuts down trees considered to be "fire ladders."
