San Diego Sizzles Near 90 Today Before Weekend Cooldown Kicks In

San Diego is waking up today under mostly cloudy skies and patchy fog, with temperatures around 72 degrees, but the gray start will give way to another hot afternoon near 90. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for coastal San Diego County through 8 PM tomorrow, with inland neighborhoods expected to run even warmer.

Fog Gives Way To A Hot, Sunny Afternoon

Patchy fog is expected to linger until about 11 AM, followed by mostly sunny skies and light south winds ranging from calm to 10 mph. Rain is not expected today, but the combination of heat and unusually warm overnight temperatures could make it harder for homes and bodies to cool down.

The National Weather Service in San Diego advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun when possible and check on relatives and neighbors during the advisory. People looking for an air-conditioned break can also review the City of San Diego’s places to cool down.

Beach Hazards Continue Through Tonight

Today’s Beach Hazards Statement runs through 11 PM, with surf of 3 to 5 feet and sets reaching 7 feet, along with dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding. High tides are expected to peak at roughly 6.2 to 6.5 feet between 8 and 10 PM, creating a risk for low-lying beach parking lots, boardwalks and roads.

Swimming and surfing conditions will be hazardous, particularly along south- and southwest-facing beaches. The weather service recommends obeying posted warnings and flags, checking with a lifeguard before entering the water and swimming near a lifeguarded area.

Weekend Brings A Gradual Cooldown

Tomorrow stays sunny and hot with a high near 90, while Saturday reaches about 89 after another round of morning fog. Next Sunday brings more noticeable relief, with sunny skies and a high near 85.

The cooling trend continues next Monday, when the high is expected to reach around 81 under mostly sunny skies. A slight chance of rain showers appears late next Monday night and into next Tuesday morning, but it should turn mostly sunny near 82, with partly sunny skies next Wednesday and only a limited chance of additional showers.
