U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers successfully intercepted and seized over 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $4 million, stopping an attempted smuggling operation at the Tecate Port of Entry near San Diego last week, according to a press release from CBP.
The operation began when a 46-year-old man driving a tractor-trailer and seeking entry into the United States from Mexico was referred for further examination following an initial inspection at the Tecate Port of Entry's cargo facility, which is a vital point in the battle against drug smuggling and other illegal activities; with CBP officers working tirelessly to maintain border security, ensuring that legitimate travelers can pass through safely while identifying and stopping those attempting to smuggle contraband into the country, the officers' vigilance is key.

In this situation, after being alerted to potential inconsistencies during a non-intrusive inspection technology screening, officers embarked on a comprehensive inspection of the trailer's roof panel, eventually discovering a total of 138packages concealed within it.
Upon further examination, the contents of the packages were tested and identified as methamphetamine, totalling 1,815.59 pounds – an astonishing amount, particularly when considering the drug's estimated street value of $3,994,298 according to CBP; a significant blow dealt to the smugglers and a testament to the effective strategies and continuous dedication by CBP officers in protecting the United States' borders and citizens.
Rosa Hernandez, the Port Director for the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, praised the efforts of the officers involved in the operation, "Our officers are always ready to serve and protect our borders. Their collaborative efforts to achieve this common goal are truly remarkable."
As a result of the successful operation, the tractor-trailer and narcotics were seized by CBP officers, while the driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing, ensuring that those attempting to break the law and smuggle illegal substances into the United States face consequences for their actions; a clear message that such criminal activities will not be tolerated and that smugglers will continually be met with the full force of the law.
In a tweet from the Director of Field Operations Sidney Aki, posted on his Twitter account, he celebrated the officers' success with a playful nod to the manner in which the methamphetamine was concealed: "The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire! @CBP officers put out smugglers attempt to conceal $4 million worth of methamphetamine."
