San Jose police are on a mission to find the drivers involved in two separate hit-and-run collisions that left two unhoused women dead in the span of just two days. The first collision, a horrific scene that unfolded near South White Road and Buckner Drive in East San Jose, resulted in the death of an elderly woman who was struck outside of a crosswalk by a driver in a pickup truck—a truck possibly being a silver Dodge Ram as reported by CBS News.
Less than 36 hours later, another life was lost in a second hit-and-run collision on Capitol Expressway near the Monterey Road interchange in South San Jose; a woman tragically struck by yet another driver who failed to pull over and face responsibility. In both cases, the victims, unhoused females, were crossing outside designated crosswalks.
Following the tragic events, San Jose residents and business owners express deep concern, like Kao Khok, owner of a nearby donut shop after the first incident, stating, "They gotta get some kind of signage or something. Because this is like the third or fourth time something like this has happened here." according to KTVU.
Alongside the need for better traffic safety measures, it's essential that both drivers and pedestrians be mindful of potential hazards on the street. Sgt. Jorge Garibay of the San Jose Police Department stressed the importance of drivers remaining at the scene after striking someone: "It's important, if you hit something or someone, to always pull over." as mentioned by KTVU.
Pastor Scott Wagers of CHAM Deliverance Ministry, which provides outreach to unhoused residents in Santa Clara County, asked poignantly: "You run over a homeless person, shame on you. Who are you? What kind of person are you?" as told to KTVU.
In an effort to solve these devastating cases, San Jose police released surveillance footage from a business near Friday's hit-and-run incident, hoping that someone may have obtained the license plate number of the silver Dodge Ram pickup involved. At this time, police have not provided a description of the vehicle or the suspect involved in the second hit-and-run collision on Saturday.
San Jose police are urging anyone with information on either collision to come forward and help ensure the drivers involved are held accountable for their actions.
