In a chase that spanned the neighborhoods of San Lorenzo and Alameda, local law enforcement officers successfully tracked down and apprehended two young men suspected of orchestrating a heist in broad daylight that ultimately led to a hit-and-run incident, leaving an innocent juvenile wounded in their wake. Kevin Perry, 21, and Dewey Nguyen, 21, have been charged with a series of felonies according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
The reckless escapade, occurring on August 28th, 2023, involved an attempted burglary at the San Lorenzo Citibank branch followed by a hit-and-run targeting a young pedestrian as the two men sought to evade law enforcement. Thanks to the work of the Eden Township Substation (ETS) Investigations, they were swiftly located, their fate sealed.
Operating on a few investigative leads, deputies traced the pair to a property in the City of Alameda, where their stolen getaway vehicle a Lexus sedan linked to Nguyen were discovered. The arrest was anything but smooth. Upon being discovered, Perry and Nguyen attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended and subsequently detained without further incident.
Perry is a parolee with a prior criminal history consisting of home invasion and burglary, while his accomplice Nguyen has already faced the law for robbery, being on Alameda County probation at the time of their arrest. Perry made another desperate escape attempt from the ETS interview room, fortuitously failing to crawl through the ceiling and ensuring that both he and Nguyen remain in police custody at Santa Rita Jail.
The initial Citibank holdup involved one suspect, clad in a dark hooded sweatshirt and mask, calmly entering the bank and demanding $20,000 with the chilling threat of an explosion. Meanwhile, his accomplice donned all-black clothing while acting as a lookout. Together, the two men embarked on their doomed heist, leaving without a single dollar in hand but with a trail of grief and destruction in their wake.
As events unfolded, a brief vehicle pursuit went awry for the suspects when their getaway vehicle struck a young pedestrian in a crosswalk. Deputies ceased the pursuit to tend to the injured victim, who was then transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
