The Oakland Police Department (OPD) announced the arrest of Victor Sledge in connection to the homicide case of Nicole Marcy, which took place on July 19, 2023, in the 1200 block of 18th Avenue, according to an OPD press release. A collaborative effort between the OPD Homicide Investigators, Violent Crimes Operation Center, and the US Marshals led to the safe apprehension of the suspect.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged Sledge with multiple crimes, including murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and violating terms of probation.
In a single day on July 19, four people died in three separate shootings throughout the city; the fourth fatal shooting occurred late in the morning on the 2100 block of 106th Avenue, as CBS San Francisco reported. Responding to a reported car accident, officers discovered the male driver suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, the victim, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earlier that same day, officers responded to two separate shootings. The first incident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. on the 1100 block of 89th Avenue, where two people were found dead inside a residence. A few hours later, just before 5:00 a.m., Marcy was shot and killed on the 1200 block of 18th Avenue—a tragedy that would eventually lead to the arrest of Victor Sledge, as reported by the OPD press release.
The names of the victims in the separate shootings have not yet been released, and although Sledge was arrested in Marcy's case, the Oakland police have not announced any additional arrests or suspect information concerning the other cases.
Amid the rising violence in Oakland, the arrest of Victor Sledge is a reminder that justice can be served, and that the diligent efforts of local law enforcement can make a difference.
