For two Massachusetts men, an unfortunate incident in Jericho Mountain State Park during a UTV excursion left them with grave injuries. According to an article by The Boston Globe, the crash occurred on Sunday, when Hanyu Li, 23 years old from Boston, and Dezheng Hong, 26 years old from Quincy, suffered a rollover in their rented UTV while navigating the Brook Road Trail.
Berlin Police officials have cited speed and inexperience as the main factors contributing to the crash. Li, the UTV's operator, was driving for the first time, as reported by Newsbreak. While confronted by a challenging steep downhill corner, Li over-corrected, leading to the vehicle rolling over several times before striking an a tree.
First responders from the Berlin Fire Department, Berlin Ambulance, and Berlin Police Department promptly arrived at the scene after receiving a 911 call. NH Fish and Game reported that both men were rushed to the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin for treatment. Their injuries were classified as serious, yet non-life-threatening.
Fortunately, Li and Hong were wearing appropriate safety gear and seatbelts, which undoubtedly prevented even graver consequences. The group they were with provided instant assistance while emergency responders were on their way. Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as factors in the crash according to both News Center Maine and an NH Fish and Game press release.
