A tense encounter between a driver and a pedestrian in Berkeley took a dangerous turn on August 9, when a verbal dispute led to gunshots being fired, ultimately damaging a local auto repair shop. Thankfully, no bystanders were injured in the incident, which took place at the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and Camelia Street in the city's northwest region. However, the chain of events and their consequences have many concerned. This gun-related incident comes at a time when Berkeley's shooting numbers have been on a downward trend. While last year saw 34 shootings in the city by this time, 2023 has experienced only 17 so far.
According to the Berkeley Police Department, at around 6:05 p.m., a pedestrian began crossing the road at the aforementioned intersection. The driver, in a red Nissan Versa, failed to yield to the pedestrian while they were in the crosswalk, eventually leading to a verbal altercation. The argument escalated to the point that the pedestrian went inside a nearby business, prompting the vehicle's occupants to follow and attempt to continue the confrontation inside.
As the Berkeley Scanner reports, there were five men in the red Nissan at the time of the dispute. Some of the vehicle's occupants stepped out to confront the pedestrian and another person at the business, where a heated verbal exchange ensued. With tensions boiling over, the occupants returned to their car and drove past the front of the business. It was at this point that an occupant inside the car began firing several rounds from a gun, aiming towards the building.
No injuries were reported, but the local auto repair shop sustained damage from the gunfire. The repair shop, which is located along Camelia Street between San Pablo Avenue and 10th Street, had just become the center of a potentially deadly road-rage incident.
Although the Nissan and its occupants had left the scene by the time police arrived, the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, with no arrests made as of yet. The incident led to a temporary road closure in the area as police gathered evidence and evaluated the situation. By approximately 7 p.m., Camelia Street was reopened for normal traffic while Berkeley police continued their work.
