The professor's unsuspecting brother stumbled upon the chemicals while cleaning out the house and shed. The shock discovery prompted an emergency call to 911 and led to an extensive evacuation of nearby residents, which was expected to last at least 24 hours, as reported by NBC Bay Area. The situation quickly escalated from a small incident to a major hazmat event, drawing in hazmat crews, Contra Costa fire officials, and even the FBI bomb squad.

The hazardous materials were found in various containers, some in good condition and others degraded, making it challenging for investigators to discern the exact nature of the substances, per CBS San Francisco. Contra Costa Fire Protection District Capt. Chris Toler stated that the chemicals, far from being basic household products, showed potential for explosive chemical reactions, some triggered by light, motion, or water exposure. As hundreds of displaced residents sought shelter at the Contra Costa Community College gymnasium, the operation to secure and dispose of the chemicals properly dragged on underwater. With ongoing efforts to reduce the evacuation zone and allow residents temporary access to retrieve important belongings under police escort, it remains uncertain whether the cleanup process will be complete before the end of August 3.
