
On Monday, a disturbing incident took place in Redwood City, California, as an assault with a deadly weapon transpired amid hate crime allegations. The victim, subjected to homophobic slurs and violent actions, declined medical attention while the perpetrator now faces charges for both the assault and a felony hate crime statute, according to Redwood City Police Department.
The altercation took place around 1:38 PM on 4th Ave. and Spring St., where a group of individuals, including the suspect, 43-year-old Redwood City resident Cipriano Munoz, were reportedly loitering and consuming alcohol. It is alleged that Munoz directed homophobic slurs towards the victim before proceeding to punch him in the face multiple times and striking him on the neck with an aluminum pipe. The pipe, which was a piece of a crutch belonging to another person in the group, served as the deadly weapon in this attack.
Upon responding to the scene, Redwood City Police took Munoz into custody and subsequently booked him into the San Mateo County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and a felony hate crime statute. The victim sustained minor injuries to the face and neck but declined medical attention.
