With multiple pool renovations taking place across Boston, the demand for certified lifeguards has never been higher. To help meet the need and ensure the safety of its residents, Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) will be hosting two lifeguard hiring events in September, expanding from the two events held in August, according to Boston.gov.
The September hiring events will take place on Monday, September 11 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 16 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the BCYF Mason Pool in Roxbury. The lifeguard application process during these events will streamline the hiring process by bringing all necessary steps—swim evaluation, skill evaluation, interview, and paperwork processing—under one roof for potential candidates.
The BCYF lifeguard hiring events follow the reopening of the BCYF Paris Street Pool in East Boston and the BCYF Hennigan Pool in Jamaica Plain. The reopening of the Paris Street Pool came after a significant investment of $10.2 million in the facility. Over the coming months, several other city-owned pools will also reopen in response to(pool) years of disinvestment in the community.
Lifeguard positions with BCYF start at $22 per hour, and even part-time lifeguards can enjoy the benefits available to City of Boston employees, such as health, dental, and retirement benefits, along with paid vacation. The hiring events aim to fill both full-time and part-time positions, as well as Head Lifeguard positions, according to Boston.gov.
Mayor Wu's Swim Safe initiative has spearheaded this push for lifeguard recruitment and pool renovations, reflecting the city's dedication to water safety among its residents.
Residents interested in applying for lifeguard positions should be at least 18 years old and must be prepared to provide at least two references, contact information, a state ID or license, and American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Although proof of Boston residency will be required later in the application process, it is not needed at the initial stage. Applicants can either sign up online at bit.ly/BCYFLifeguardHiringEvent or attend the hiring event as a walk-in.
BCYF Mason Pool, where the hiring events will take place, is located at 159 Norfolk Ave in Roxbury. Parking is available next to the pool and on nearby streets, while public transportation options like local buses that serve Massachusetts Avenue are within short walking distance.
With these hiring events, BCYF hopes to foster strong community engagement and continue the transformation of city-owned pools into safe and accessible spaces for residents to connect, learn, and enjoy recreational activities. Interested candidates can find additional information about lifeguard opportunities at BCYF Mason Pool and beyond at Boston/gov/BCYF-Aquatics.
