Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) announced yesterday, August 29th, that it will fully cover the cost of the life-saving opioid overdose reversal medication Narcan for its members, as part of its ongoing efforts to address the opioid epidemic, according to The Boston Globe. The announcement signifies a crucial step in providing easy access to the naloxone-based treatment, regarded as the standard solution for opioid overdose emergencies.
Since 2018, BCBSMA has been at the forefront of the battle against opioid addiction, implementing measures such as removing copays for Narcan and providing Narcan toolkits to employers, according to a press release from BCBSMA. The company's efforts extend to substance use disorder treatment, education, prevention, and engaging employer participation in the prevention of overdoses.
Dr. Sandhya Rao, Chief Medical Officer of BCBSMA, explained the importance of making Narcan widely available, stating, "Naloxone has become the standard treatment for opioid overdose and making it available more widely is a key strategy in controlling the overdose crisis," as reported by WHDH News. With the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approving Narcan's over-the-counter use in March, the insurer's decision to waive out-of-pocket costs for the medication ensures that members with substance use disorders can access vital treatment when needed more than ever.
Massachusetts has witnessed a disturbing increase in opioid-related overdose deaths, with 2,357 confirmed fatalities in 2022, according to WWLP News.
