An Oakland resident, Cornelius Jeremiah Smith, has been arrested on July 20, 2023, and charged with the attempted murder of his former girlfriend, whom he reportedly shot multiple times with a semi-automatic weapon, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Smith faces two prior strike convictions, and if found guilty of this violent crime, he could serve a minimum sentence of 40 years to life.
The gut-wrenching incident took place on July 13, 2023, and Oakland Housing Authority investigators have disclosed that Smith fired multiple shots, striking his former lover twice. The women, although critically injured, managed to survive and was admitted to the hospital for medical attention. She remains in precarious condition but is expected to pull through.
District Attorney Price has expressed alarm and firm resolve, stating that "violence against women in this community is rampant and intolerable." The county's top prosecutor is committed to protecting the victims, particularly women, and holding the perpetrators accountable. Price further emphasizes that the aim is to send a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated in Oakland or anywhere else in the community.
