A distressing incident took place in Oakland today leaving one person dead after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 880. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the fatality, puzzling over the victim's peculiar behavior leading up to the tragic accident.
The CHP traffic report paints a confusing picture of the events that unfolded late that night. According to the report, the unidentified male victim was walking backward with the flow of traffic in the center divide of the highway, with no vehicles nearby when the incident occurred at 11:14 PM. A gray Honda Civic was reportedly involved in the accident.

The first responders arrived at the scene, which was near the 29th Avenue off-ramp on southbound I-880 just north of Fruitvale; however, their attempts at saving the victim's life were unsuccessful. Oakland Fire Department took over chest compressions from CHP officers, but ultimately, their resuscitation efforts did not bring the pedestrian back to life, and the man was pronounced dead. Shortly after, the CHP closed their incident.
The direct cause of the accident, as well as the events leading up to it, remain unknown.
