As the aftermath of the powerful Tropical Storm Hilary lingers, I-8 in rural East County – a crucial route for drivers between San Diego and Imperial counties – remains congested with debris. Although Caltrans work crews labored throughout the night to clear roadblock after roadblock, the rockslide that deposited a large boulder and rubble onto the freeway, near In-Ko-Pah Park Road, continues to impede both lanes of traffic according to Fox 5 San Diego.
The one-way traffic control measures that have been put in place are still in effect as of this afternoon, and there has been no precise estimate provided on when I-8 will be completely accessible once again for travelers. Caltrans has urged the public to expect delays and avoid unnecessary trips in the area if possible, amidst the ongoing efforts to mitigate the rockslide's consequences.
As reported today, Caltrans' official Facebook page confirmed that their teams had successfully reopened State Routes 78 and 94, along with other roadways affected by storm-related closures. Tropical Storm Hilary had blasted through the area, causing destruction with its relentless winds and heavy downpours; the relief efforts, however, shined a light on the collaborative spirit of the dedicated work crews.
As the clean-up efforts continue, those in the area can follow live updates on road conditions through the FOX 5 Traffic Map.
