As concern mounts in Redwood City, the community watches the developments of two separate child annoyance cases near Sequoia High School that have left people on edge. With no direct connection found yet between the instances, authorities have asked for the public's assistance in identifying the suspects involved in both incidents. According to a Redwood City Police Department press release, the first occurrence happened on August 18th, when a one-eyed White male in his 50s approached a 13-year-old girl at the bus turnaround at #1 James. Offering her candy and marijuana cigarettes, the juvenile hopped onto the bus without incident, thankfully avoiding an escalation.
The second case, which took place on August 23rd, involved a 16-year-old Sequoia High School student walking on a sidewalk on the 100 block of Arch Street. The suspect, a Hispanic male adult in his 20s or early 30s donning a medium-length beard and paint-spattered clothes, drove an older white minivan. The suspect propositioned the student for a massage. Stating that he'd pay $150 for the service, the student quickly fled the scene and informed authorities, allowing them to launch an investigation immediately.
Though the police department has assigned investigators to both incidents, the need for prompt action cannot be understated. In their plea for public assistance, Lieutenant Nick Perna of the Redwood City Police Department stresses the urgency of the matter: “If you have information regarding either of the suspects, please contact the Redwood City Police Department at 650-780-7100.”
The need for parents and students alike to remain vigilant rings abundantly clear as these cases unfold. The Redwood City Police Department offers sage advice for those subjected to such situations, urging them to report incidents to law enforcement immediately. “The sooner we receive the information, the quicker we can assign investigators to work on it,” Lieutenant Perna stated in the press release.
