The Blue Envelope Program was developed through a collaborative effort involving the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, community organizations, the San Diego County Police Chiefs' and Sheriff's Association, and the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Scheduled for an official launch on October 16, the program aims to promote awareness among deputies and officers.
Individuals participating in the program can display the Blue Envelope logo or present a Blue Envelope upon contact with law enforcement or other community service personnel. The Blue Envelope branded products may contain the individual's identification, contact information, medical information, instructions regarding communication preferences, or pertinent vehicle operating documents, such as vehicle registration and proof of insurance. This initiative will help officers understand that a person carrying the Blue Envelope requires additional accommodations or assistance during interactions.
San Diego County's innovative approach has been met with enthusiastic support from a growing list of organizations including Alzheimer’s San Diego, the American Diabetes Association, the Autism Society of San Diego, Deaf Community Services of San Diego, and many others.
Deputies and officers will receive additional resources on the Blue Envelope Program as part of their continued professional training, ensuring familiarity and successful implementation. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors have also expressed their gratitude for the program's support.
