Art enthusiasts in Carlsbad are in for a treat as the William D. Cannon Art Gallery is set to unveil a new exhibit this Saturday, September 30, titled Dual Visions. The exhibit showcases abstract works created by talented artists Sijia Chen and Kelsey Overstreet, according to the City of Carlsbad announcement.

Both Chen and Overstreet have distinct backgrounds and inspirations for their art. According to the gallery's website, Chen's work focuses on personal identity, community, and cultural convergence. She employs papercut collage paintings, sculptures, and public art to create visual narratives that prompt contemplation of human movement and societal structure. Community engagement and collaboration are essential to her art process.

On the other hand, Overstreet takes an introspective approach to her art, concentrating on the human body and its ability to process stimuli. Her work is largely influenced by her physical environment and personal experiences. Through a process-based approach to painting, she captures light and shadow in her abstract pieces, encouraging viewers to appreciate the world's beauty and complexity.

Dual Visions offers an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the captivating world of abstract art, as well as the creative processes of these two remarkable artists. To enrich the experience, the gallery is also hosting an artist reception on Saturday, October 14, allowing attendees to meet both Sijia Chen and Kelsey Overstreet while enjoying light refreshments and live music by the San Diego wind ensemble, Left Coast Quintet.

In addition to the artist reception, the gallery provides a unique opportunity for the public to interact with each of the artists and learn about their artmaking process through their pop-up guest artist residency program. Sijia Chen will be available on October 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., while Kelsey Overstreet can be found on November 11 from noon to 2 p.m.
