
The City of Boston is calling for student poll workers for the upcoming Municipal Election slated for Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The program aims to immerse the city's youth in the democratic process by helping them understand their civic duties, the framework of elections, and their right to elected representation. To make, this happen, students will serve as poll workers, contributing to the overall election day operations according to Boston Government.
As the day of election inches closer, the role of a student poll worker gains prominence. Students who participate will act as inspectors, greeters, or (interpreter for bilingual students), ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections.
To qualify, students must be at least 16 years old residing is in Boston, and enrolled in a Boston Public School by November 7, 2023. Also, participation in a two-hour training session in October or November, registration in the Poll Chief program, and submission of a Parental/Family Consent Form are mandatory according to Boston Government.
The program guarantees students a hands-on experience in the nitty-gritty of the electoral process on November 7, 2023. Students who also are eligible voters, can serve as greeters, inspectors, or interpreters, and non-eligible voters can also serve as greeters or interpreters. Furthermore, the program also welcomes non-citizens to serve as greeters, or interpreters if they're bilingual. This initiative is expected to stimulate civic engagement among Boston's diverse youth and promote a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society according to Boston Government.
