In the quiet city of Martinez, California, a luxury car dealership has yet again fallen victim to a brazen crime spree targeting its most valuable assets – high-end cars. Thieves broke into Platinum Motors early last Tuesday, making off with two luxury vehicles worth a combined $187,000.
According to NBC Bay Area, the thieves entered the dealership around 5 a.m., with surveillance footage showing them carefully searching for car keys. Manager Ernesto Villalobos expressed his concern, stating how they methodically went from room to room, ransacking and leaving a trail of debris behind. The thieves stole a BMW worth $107,000 and an Audi worth $80,000, leaving the dealership in chaos and despair.
This wasn't the first time Platinum Motors has grappled with this ordeal. The business, which had already moved from San Leandro to Martinez due to persistent thefts, continues to be a lucrative target. In an interview with KTVU, Villalobos mentioned that they had to relocate since thieves continued to follow them due to their high-end cars' appeal.
Beyond the physical loss of the cars, the dealership is plagued by the fear of future break-ins and the safety of its employees. KTVU reported that Villalobos and his colleagues worry about their ability to make a living amid such circumstances. The thefts also inconvenience customers: one of the stolen vehicles was scheduled for sale on the same day as the heist.
Since the theft, they've hired armed security and the police have agreed to patrol the area. However, the constant threat still hovers over the dealership as they are missing between 10 to 15 keys for other vehicles, raising concerns that the thieves might return to steal more cars.
The impact of these thefts extends far beyond the dollar value of the vehicles stolen. It reaches deep into the lives of those who make their livelihood from working at the dealership. As Villalobos lamented to KTVU, "All I can say is, we have families to support. You're not helping us, you know, so this is affecting everybody."
